The amphiphilic biodegradable polymer surfactant, poly(ethyleneoxide monooleate)-blockpoly(D,L-lactide) (MOPEO-PLA), was shown to form microemulsions in chloroform solution and to extract water and protein into their microemulsions from the aqueous phase. The water content in the chloroform phase significantly increased with the MOPEO-PLA concentration, indicating that a MOPEO-PLA microemulsion was formed with a large amount of water molecules. The largest amount of cytochrome c in the MOPEO-PLA microemulsion phase was extracted when the pH of the aqueous phase was close to the pI value for cytochrome c, and the degree of extraction increased at higher temperatures.From these results, the main factor for the extraction of cytochrome c was found to be the hydrophobic interaction between MOPEO-PLA and cytochrome c. The MOPEO-PLA microemulsion provides a benign extraction process for proteins. A MOPEO-PLA microemulsion system would provide a new encapsulation system in a biodegradable polymer matrix for delivery of proteins and peptides.

Solid powder generating minus ion was microencapsulated by polystyrene with the drying-in-liquid method. In the microencapsulation, (R)-(þ) limonene as the solvent for polystyrene and ethylene glycol as the continuous phase were adopted instead of the conventional organic solvent such as dichloromethane, benzene and toluene, and water, respectively. It was mainly investigated whether the solvents adopted here could be applied to the drying-in-liquid method or not and how the viscosity of the shell solution and the oil soluble surfactant affected the content of core material. The oil soluble surfactant made hydrophilic solid powder more hydrophobic and resulted in an increase of the content. Microcapsules containing solid powder could be prepared with the drying-in-liquid method using (R)-(þ) limonene and ethylene glycol. An increase in the viscosity of the shell solution repressed the movement of solid powder particles in a droplet of the shell solution during the microencapsulation process and resulted in the higher content.

The microcapsules containing water were prepared with the suspension polymerization method, and the fundamental investigation was performed to make the effect of microencapsulated water on expansion behavior of microcapsules clear. In the experiment, only the volume of water added into styrene monomer was changed to make the effect of microencapsulated water volume clear, and three kinds of water contents were measured: namely, the initial water content for the microcapsules just after preparation, the middle water content for the microcapsules dried at 44°C for 24 hours, and the final water content for the microcapsules dried at 110°C for 1 hours. With increasing the added water volume, the initial water content increased; the middle water content decreased after increasing halfway through, and the final water content gradually decreased. Also, with increasing the added water volume, the drying rate of the microcapsules increased and the expansion ratio decreased. The water volume required to expand the microcapsules, in other words, the critical shell thickness required to prevent evaporation of water and to contribute to expansion of microcapsules is discussed.
