Characteristics of Alumina Membranes Prepared From Different Metal-Organic Compounds

Abstract: Aluminum tri-sec-butoxide (ALTSB), aluminum ethoxide (ALET) and aluminum isopropoxide (ALISP) were used to prepare defect free, meso-porous membrane following dip-coating, drying and sintering. The membrane contained pores larger than 2 nm with either cylindrical pores open at both ends or ink bottle shape. Although ALISP suspension exhibited smaller particle size than ALTSB, both precursors produced membranes that exhibited similar pore size and pore size distribution pattern after the membranes were sintered… Show more

“…One of the strategies is to use poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) because PVA has been known to increase the mechanical strength of a green body after it is sintered. PVA was also reportedly used in the fabrication of ceramic or inorganic nanofibers, self-healing gamma-shielding nanocomposites, polymers, membranes, and concretes. , In the development of a super-performance concrete, it was discovered that the addition of PVA into the concrete increased the concrete’s compressive strength by 10% and flexural strength by over 26%. The increase in the mechanical strength was due to the growing physical friction and interlocking effect caused by the PVA as demonstrated in another work .…”

“…This is achieved by means of sol-gel techniques or chemical vapor deposition (CVD). But, the sol-gel approach to fabricating composite membranes is on the rise recently (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11) due to its ease of preparation and ability to form porous films with a variety of chemical composition and structure.…”
