“…The Messolonghi‐Etoliko lagoon complex (Western Greece coast; Ionian Sea) is composed of six lagoons and represents one of the most important coastal lagoon systems in the Mediterranean Sea and the largest in Greece, covering approximately 50% of the total Greek lagoon surface (Anonymous 2001). As in the majority of the Mediterranean lagoons, the system in the present study is also exploited as a fishing ground (Ananiades 1984; Kapetsky 1984; Ardizzone, Cataudella & Rossi 1988; Peja, Vaso, Miho, Rakaj & Crivelli 1996; Anonymous 2001). Lagoon fisheries are based on the ontogenic and seasonal passage of fish from these important nursery and feeding grounds.…”

“…Adriatic shore is mainly sandy, whereas Ionian is almost total rocky alternated with pebble or hard sandy shores. The coastal Adriatic line represents a big potential natural resource, because of the presence of 8 lagoon ecosystems, most subject to intensive fishery and/or shellfish exploitation [9]. Several Albanian rivers flow into the Adriatic Sea; the biggest and the most important are Drini, Mati, Ishmi, Shkumbini, Vjosa.…”
