Characteristics Effects of Weed on Growth Performance and Yield of Maize (Zea Mays)

Abstract: Maize (Zea mays), which is the third most important cereal crop of the world, is an important dual purpose crop used in human diet and animal feed. The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of weeds on the growth and yield of maize, and to determine the best time and frequency of weeding to get an optimum yield. The experiment was conducted at Teaching and Research Farm of The College of Education, Lanlate in the cropping season of 2016. There were four treatments replicated four times to make the… Show more

“…The weather conditions in REC Zlotniki during application were largely favourable for preemergence, as well as postemergence applied herbicides. The weed community in maize can include many species, but it is generally dominated by a few species that are most abundant, spread the best and have the strongest effect on the crops, limiting its growth, development and yield (Iderawumi and Friday 2018). Species occurring during our own study belonged to the most common weed community in maize fields and competed strongly with it (Hossain et al 2019).…”

“…Similarly, Ahmad and Gafoor, 2004 reported that black seed crop yield can be reduced by 60-85% due to weed interference whereas this competition can lead to complete crop failure if weeds weres remained in competition with main crop for the entire growing season of crop (Iderawumi and Friday, 2018). Yield and yield related parameter like plant height, No.…”
