INTRODUCTION Mauritius has one of the highest rates of smoking in Africa. Smoking cessation is a priority for preventing tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study is to identify the predictors of quit intentions among smokers in Mauritius in order to strengthen tobacco control policies and inform the development and delivery of services that may increase the likelihood of successful quitting. METHODS Data were drawn from Wave 1 (2009) of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Mauritius Survey, a face-to-face cohort survey of a nationally representative sample of 598 adult smokers who were randomly selected from nine geographic districts in Mauritius using a multistage sampling procedure. RESULTS The vast majority of smokers (77.8%) had plans to quit smoking. Longer duration of past quit attempts (6 months or less), perceiving benefits of quitting, worrying about smoking damaging health in the future, and not enjoying smoking were significantly associated with quit intentions. However, socio-demographic characteristics, past quit attempts, overall attitude about smoking, and Heaviness of Smoking Index (HSI) were not associated with quit intentions. CONCLUSIONS The predictors of quit intentions among Mauritian smokers were generally similar to those found among smokers in other high-and middle-income countries. However, in contrast to findings in those other countries, nicotine dependence as measured by the HSI was not a significant predictor of quit intentions among Mauritian smokers. These findings highlight the need to consider the predictors of quit intentions when developing and delivering smoking cessation support services in Mauritius.

The Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) is an experimental measure of risk taking that has commonly been employed to measure the risk taking behavior of nonclinical populations. Previous research has indicated that the task measures a unique aspect of behavioral disinhibition, but there has not as yet been focus upon the possible impact of other aspects of cognitive processing on performance. The current study investigated the cognitive factors related to performance of the BART in an alcohol-using sample. Seventeen individuals with long-term alcohol use were matched for age and education to a group of 17 nonusing participants. The results indicated that the alcohol-using group pumped the balloons on the BART to a lesser extent than did the nonusing group across all trials on the task. The results indicate that the alcohol-using group made less "optimal" decisions on the BART most notably due to neuropsychological impairment in the domains of immediate memory and executive functioning.

Discussion: Intermittent and daily light smokers differ on several tobacco-related and psychosocial variables. Attending to these factors in prevention and cessation programs may enhance abstinence in both groups. IntroductionSmoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States ( Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2004 ). Despite a decrease in smoking among middle-aged and older adults, young adult smoking prevalence declines are smaller, and reductions in moderate to heavy smoking have been accompanied by an increase in prevalence of light and intermittent smoking ( Pierce, White, & Messer, 2009 ). One group of young adults who demonstrate high rates of smoking are individuals serving in the military ( Bray et al., 2006 ;Nelson & Pederson, 2008 ).Two subgroups of smokers who have received growing attention ( Fiore et al., 2008 ) and have yet to be examined among military personnel are light and intermittent (i.e., nondaily) smokers.
