Characteristics and Outcomes of Long-Stay Patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: Long-stay patients in the PICU have a higher risk of mortality as compared with non–long-stay patients. We aim to describe mortality and characteristics of long-stay patients and to determine the risk factors for mortality in these children. Total 241 (4.8%) long-stay admissions were identified. Mortality of long-stayers was 48/241 (20%). Higher severity-of-illness score at admission, need for organ support therapies, number of nosocomial infections, and bloodstream nosocomial infection were associated with a … Show more

“…by 84.6%, reducing the mortality rate from 2% to 0%, shortening the duration of hospitalization by 30.1%, and reducing hospitalization expenses by 42.6%. Long-stay admissions have been reported to significantly increase a patient's mortality (11), thus our results demonstrating that BAL can significantly shorten a patient's hospital stay have important clinical significance. Furthermore, BAL is simple, causes no significant side effects or complications, and avoids radiation damage; thus, it is worthy of clinical application.…”

“…A consequence of some children having increasingly complex medical has been some require prolonged PICU admissions. While many parents of children with critical illness experience anxiety and depression, 2 parents of children with prolonged critical illness may be at risk for greater levels of distress, 6 as prolonged admissions have higher mortality, morbidity, and complications, 17,[27][28][29] as well as presumably greater disruptions to families' routines and finances. 30 Additionally, studies show PICU clinicians commonly experience moral distress when caring for children in challenging circumstances, 10,31,32 and these emotions may be exacerbated when the child involved has a prolonged critical illness.…”
