Characteristics and Outcomes of Choroidal Neovascularization Occurring After Macular Hole Surgery

Abstract: Choroidal neovascular complexes occurring after macular hole surgery tend to share certain characteristics, including foveal involvement, frequent sparing of the central area corresponding to the site of the closed macular hole, and generally poor visual outcomes. Therapeutic modalities including photodynamic therapy and surgical options may be considered in these patients.

“…These CNVM are predominantly classic, involving fovea with frequent sparing of the central area corresponding to the site of closed macular hole and have extensive leakage on FFA with generally poor visual prognosis [5]. The CNVM in our patient was classic but the central area was not spared as observed by Tabandeh and Smiddy [7].…”

“…However, the most plausible explanation is age-related degenerative changes in the RPE and Bruch membrane, as evidenced by old age and a high prevalence of drusen in both eyes of most patients who showed CNV development after macular hole surgery 6. The patient in the present report also showed bilateral multiple drusen and was 64 years old.…”

“…To date, there are only a few case reports of CNV that have developed after macular hole surgery 26. Tabandeh et al6 reported characteristics of CNV occurring after macular hole surgery.…”
