Characteristics and Origin of Sedimentary-Related Manganese Layers in Timor Island, Indonesia

Abstract: Sedimentary-related manganese layers have been discovered in South Central Timor Regency, Timor Island, Indonesia, which is tectonically active and being uplifted due to north-trending tectonic collision between Timor Island arc and Australian continental crust. The manganese layers of 2 to 10 cm-wide interbed with deep sea sedimentary rocks including reddish -reddish brown claystone, radiolarian chert, slate, marl as well as white and pinkish calcilutite of Nakfunu Formations. Stratigraphically, the rock form… Show more

“…Manganese in Timor are generally present in the Jurassic-Late Cretaceous (?) succession that is exposed within the overlain Scaly Clay Unit [44]. Areas with such geological potentials may not be suitable for a landfill site as there may be mining activities to be developed in the future.…”

“…Mn levels reach more than 30 times the recommended levels over the broad region of coliform contamination. Several suites of fine-grained Timorese rocks contain abundant Mn nodules (Audley-Charles 1965;Idrus et al 2013;Margolis et al 1978) and may be supplying lithogenic Mn oxides to the Dili region. Excessive bacterial activity relating to coliform contamination may lower the redox potential, reducing the Mn oxides and allowing Mn to migrate into wells in the shallow aquifer (Gounot 1994).…”

“…One area with promising manganese deposits is manganese from the island of Timor, East Nusa Tenggara province. Manganese layers related to sedimentary rocks have been found in the south of Central Timor Regency, Timor Island, Indonesia [3]. Even the possibility is not closed to neighboring Timor Leste.…”
