Characteristics and management of ocular sarcoidosis

Abstract: Sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that affects many systemic organs, including the eye. The eye is the second most frequently affected organ in patients with sarcoidosis after lung disease. Approximately 30-50% of patients with systemic sarcoidosis develop uveitis, which is a sight-threatening intraocular inflammatory disorder. Sarcoidosis is the leading cause of uveitis in Japan and is one of the major clinical entities in many countries. Therefore, uveitis in association with … Show more

“…Thus, its serum level serves as a lagging indicator if sarcoidosis originates in the eye—similar to biopsies and scans outlined above. Therefore, we currently prefer the measurement of sIL-2R, which has not only been shown to serve as an important biomarker for earlier detection of ocular sarcoidosis but has also been recently suggested to be preferred as a diagnostic criterion [ 22 , 23 ].…”

“…We present a case of sarcoidosis complicated by optic neuritis. In sarcoidosis, the eye is the second most frequently affected organ after the lungs 1 . Uveitis is the most common ocular inflammatory response in sarcoidosis, and optic neuritis is extremely rare 2 .…”

“…Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatous disease of unknown cause and is frequently localized in the lung, mediastinal/hilar lymph nodes, skin, liver, and eyes. Eye complications are common in sarcoidosis, with approximately 30%–50% of patients developing uveitis 1 . Uveitis is the most common ocular inflammatory response in patients with sarcoidosis; however, involvement of the optic nerve has been reported in only 1%–5% of patients with sarcoidosis 2 .…”

“…Según otros reportes, la incidencia de uveítis por sarcoidosis es variable, pues en Italia es del 0.76% 15 , mientras que en Japón es la causa del 10-13% de los casos. A pesar de esto, la uveítis traumática representó la principal causa en nuestro grupo, afectando al 10.7% de pacientes, asociado principalmente a la práctica de algún deporte y eventos violentos 26 .…”
