Characteristics and damage mechanisms of bending fretting fatigue of materials

Abstract: Fretting fatigue has attracted substantial research interest in recent decades owing to its relevance in a wide range of applications. This paper reviews previous studies and describes ongoing research. Particularly, only a few studies on bending fretting fatigue have been conducted. This review paper emphasizes the effect of bending fretting fatigue of different materials under different operating parameters. In addition, the damage mechanisms with respect to nature of failure of materials are also discussed.… Show more

“…They included the fatigue load and critical-plane Smith-Watson-Topper (Mohd Tobi et al., 2009) fatigue parameter for Ti-6Al-4 V. The proposed approach can be used to study the frictional behavior of fretting fatigue which occurs in a wide range of practical applications. Although literature review (Chowdhury et al., 2018) shows many fretting fatigue damage studies, there are a few simulation works which were validated using the experimental results (Hojjati-Talemi et al., 2014; Mirsalimov and Akhundova, 2018; Si-Jian et al., 2018; Sun et al., 2017; Tahmasebi and Emadoddin, 2013) since the evolution of damage is so complicated.…”

“…YFS operation involves the dry friction mechanism, which is followed by so-called stick-slip auto-oscillation. Stick-slip regime of friction is widely spread in technics [13][14][15]. Usually, stickslip friction causes harm producing fretting of the frictional surface and even blocking of the mechanisms.…”

“…Figure 1 represents the use of PTFE components for the hip joint cup, piston rod, seal and others. When friction acts along with fatigue, the stress, as well as the life cycle is influenced-thus fretting fatigue occurs [2] that can be classified into reciprocating and rotating type fatigue [3]. Along with recent researches on various ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, the fretting fatigue behavior of polymers can be found to some extent.…”
