Characteristics and Changes of Extreme Precipitation in the Yellow–Huaihe and Yangtze–Huaihe Rivers Basins, China

Abstract: Many works suggest that the intensity of extreme precipitation might be changing under the background of global warming. Because of the importance of extreme precipitation in the Yellow–Huaihe and Yangtze–Huaihe River basins of China and to compare the spatial difference, the generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) function is used to fit the daily precipitation series in these basins and an estimate of the extreme precipitation spatial distribution is presented. At the same time, its long-term trends are estima… Show more

“…From a nation‐wide perspective, the annual extreme precipitation over China exhibits an upward trend, although small trend has been observed for the annual total precipitation (Zhai et al , ; You et al , ; Wang et al , ). However, regionally, an increase in annual extreme precipitation has been reported in Northwest China (NWCH) (Zhang et al , ; Jiang et al , ), the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River valley (Qian and Lin, ; Dong et al , ), part of Southwest China (SWCH) (Li et al , ), and the coastal areas of South China (SCH) (Zhai et al , ), whereas decreasing trends have been observed over Northeast China (NECH) (Wang et al , ), North China (NCH) (Fan et al , ), and the Sichuan Basin (Wang and Zhou, ; Zhai et al , ). Obvious seasonal features of extreme precipitation may be further summarized as increasing trends across all seasons in NWCH, a significant increasing trend in the Yangtze River basin in winter and summer, and a decreasing trend in central and NCH in spring and autumn (Wang and Zhou, ; Zhai et al , ; Wang et al , ).…”

“…In addition, a series of soil conservation practices (SCP) have been implemented to reduce soil erosion (Huang and Zhang, 2004;Wang et al, 2006;Yang et al, 2008). The annual precipitation has also changed significantly in many sub-basins of the YRB (Xu et al, 2009a;Dong et al, 2011;Wang et al, 2012). As a result, significant changes in streamflow were observed in the YRB (Wang et al, 2006).…”

“…As a result, the changes in both precipitation and temperature extremes are observed globally (Alexander et al 2006;Choi et al 2009;Goswami et al 2010;Haylock and Nicholls 2000;Hegerl et al 2004;Manton et al 2001;Moberg and Jones 2005;Moberg et al 2006;Tank et al 2006;Yan et al 2002). For monsoon China, the climate extreme events and their variances are analyzed systematically (Dong et al 2011;Du et al 2013;Fan et al 2012;Gong et al 2004;Hu et al 2012;Li and Wang 2012;Qian et al 2012;Su et al 2006;Tian et al 2012;Wang et al 2012;Xu et al 2011;Zhai et al 2005;Zhang et al 2011). In East China, the significant inter-decadal change of the precipitation extremes was detected over past 50 years , and more precipitation extremes occurred during past 20 years (1990)(1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009) (Li and Wang 2012).…”
