The present study reports on the adsorptive removal of heavy metals (Cr3+, Cd2+, and Cu2+) from water by a series of Lycium barbarum branch-based adsorbents: Lycium barbarum branch (denoted as LB), fungal fermented LB (FLB), LB biochar (LBB), FLB biochar (FLBB), alkaline modified LBB (ALBB), and alkaline modified FLBB (AFLBB). The six adsorbents were characterized in terms of FTIR, SEM, surface area and pore size as well as Zeta potential. Adsorptive potential of these adsorbents was tested under varying conditions – pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature. Adsorption results were well fitted with Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models. The maximum adsorption capacity (qm) was calculated to be 6.29 mg/g for Cr3+ by FLB, 11.53 mg/g for Cd2+ by LB, and 7.27 mg/g for Cu2+ by LB. Pseudo-second-order kinetic equation better described the adsorption process. Based on the thermodynamics parameters, the adsorption of heavy metals was endothermic but not spontaneous for biochars. The experimental results offer a new way for recycling and reutilizing LB in wastewater treatment.

To explore the heavy metal adsorption mechanisms by biochar-based materials, MgAl-layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) was loaded on a commercial coconut shell biochar (BC) to obtain the composite (BC-LDH) for adsorptive decontamination of Pb(II) and Cu(II) in water. The removal capacities of BC-LDH (294 and 38.6 mg/g) was higher than BC (13.3 and 11.4 mg/g) and LDH (126 and 22.7 mg/g) for aqueous Pb(II) and Cu(II). The pseudo-second-order equation and the Langmuir model could better illustrate the adsorption process, respectively. The interaction mechanisms between BC-LDH and heavy metals were classified as mineral precipitation (Qpre), cation exchange and isomorphic replacement (Qexc), electrostatic attraction (Qele), and surface complexation (Qcom) according to the characterization results. The quantitative analysis indicated that the contributions of the above mechanisms of BC-LDH for Pb(II) and Cu(II) followed the order of Qpre > Qele > Qexc and Qpre > Qexc > Qele, respectively. Compared with BC, the Qpre increased and Qele decreased significantly, certified the combination of BC and LDH provided a kind of viable composite in heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Thermochemical conversion of African balsam leaves‐cow dung hybrid wastes into biochar

African balsam (Daniella oliveri) leaves and cow dung are waste materials that are commonly accessible in Africa and can be used to produce biochar by simultaneous thermochemical processing. In this study, biochar was produced in a retort‐heated, non‐electrically powered, top‐lit updraft reactor using the biomass fuel‐powered thermochemical conversion of dried cow dung and African balsam leaves at an average temperature of 320 °C. The biochar was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analyses. After carbonization for 100 min, biochar was obtained from processed mixed leaves/cow dung with a yield of 70%. Fourier transform infrared analysis showed the presence of alkene, hydroxyl, alkyne, alkane, and sulfur‐containing functional groups. Scanning electron micrographs showed that the biochar's surface was made up of fibrillated particles with very few pores. The biochar was observed to have a surface area of 328.199 m2/g with a higher pore volume and lower pore size than biochar produced from cow dung alone. Energy dispersive spectroscopy showed that the biochar is mostly made up of carbon (67%), and that the introduction of the leaves into the biochar feedstock increased its carbon, silicon, potassium, and bromine content. Differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric analyses revealed the biochar to be thermally stable. The findings of this study are helpful for attempts to manage solid wastes (African balsam leaves and cow dung), reduce environmental pollution, and produce biochar whose properties are adequate for it to be used as a soil additive. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
