Characteristic Rain Events: A Methodology for Improving the Amenity Value of Stormwater Control Measures

Abstract: Local management of rainwater using stormwater control measures (SCMs) is gaining increased attention as a sustainable alternative and supplement to traditional sewer systems. Besides offering added utility values, many SCMs also offer a great potential for added amenity values. One way of achieving amenity value is to stage the rainwater and thus bring it to the attention of the public. We present here a methodology for creating a selection of rain events that can help bridge between engineering and landscape… Show more

“…Lastly, we suggest that the frequency of rain days or inter-event duration is taken into account during SCM planning (Andersen et al, 2017). Our results represent ambient conditions, at least 48 hours after a storm event, which represent more than half the year for this CW.…”

“…The third group of services targets the people living in the neighbourhoods where stormwater solutions are implemented. These solutions may offer improved human health and well-being, and therefore belong under the concept of liveability (Alcock et al 2014;Andersen et al 2017). Sociocultural services include a range of benefits that urban greening and attractive public open spaces may provide, e.g.…”

“…Most current studies focused on its regulating service, since GI can regulate temperature [20] and air quality [21] as well as remedy stream-related water quantity and quality issues (so-called urban stream syndrome) such as Evapotranspiration from Green Infrastructure: Benefit, Measurement, and Simulation DOI: http://dx.doi.org /10.5772/intechopen.80910 alternations in flow regimes, morphology, water and sediment quality, and associated biological composition [22][23][24]. From the cultural perspective, GI creates more green space accessible by the public and adds amenity values to municipal infrastructures [25,26]. Green infrastructure also can be used as arable space to promote urban agriculture and to supplement the local food chain [27][28][29][30][31].…”
