Characteristic Evolution and Matching

Abstract: I review the development of numerical evolution codes for general relativity based upon the characteristic initial value problem. Progress is traced from the early stage of 1D feasibility studies to 2D axisymmetric codes that accurately simulate the oscillations and gravitational collapse of relativistic stars and to current 3D codes that provide pieces of a binary black hole spacetime. A prime application of characteristic evolution is to compute waveforms via Cauchy-characteristic matching, which is also rev… Show more

“…Cauchy-characteristic extraction (CCE) is a method of computing gravitational radiation unambiguously and gauge-invariantly at future null infinity [27,28,57]. This method is by construction immune to uncertainties associated with finite-radius and gauge effects.…”

“…Metric data is propagated from the Cauchy domain onto the characteristic domain, but not vice versa. The full two-way coupling is achieved by Cauchy-characteristic matching [28,57], which has been implemented in the linearized limit in Ref. [58].…”

“…We perform 3 + 1 GR hydrodynamics simulations of rotating core collapse, for the first time in the core collapse context extracting GWs with RWZM, NP, and multiple QFs and comparing the results of these methods. In addition, and also for the first time in the present context, we utilize the CauchyCharacteristic Extraction (CCE) approach [45][46][47][48][49] that propagates the GW information to J + for completely gauge independent and unambiguous GW extraction.…”

“…In a realistic problem, such as the binary black hole problem, a global scheme is necessary to provide physically correct outer boundary data, either by using hyperboloidal time slices to extend the Cauchy evolution to infinity (see [22,23] for reviews) or by matching to an exterior characteristic or perturbative solution (see [24] for a review). Harmonic evolution offers important advantages for Cauchy-characteristic matching (CCM) which have led to successful matching in the linearized regime [10].…”
