“…Haplotypes are combinations of 5 0 subhaplotypes (combinations of + or -at the five restriction sites 5 0 to the d-globin gene) and 3 0 subhaplotypes (combinations of + or -at the two restriction sites in and 3 0 to the b-globin gene) (Shimizu et al 2004), and they were estimated by the EH program of Ott (2003). Pairwise linkage disequilibrium (LD) of D 0 between seven pairwise RFLP sites was calculated according to the method of Lewontin (1964).…”

“…Although the resolving power of the frequency distribution analysis of the b-globin gene cluster haplotypes may be inferior to that using the combination of mtDNA and Y-chromosome haplogroups, the former study using nuclear DNA polymorphisms to analyze the genetic relationships between human populations is also useful (Shimizu et al 2004). The present study analyzed the characteristics of the b-globin gene cluster haplotypes in Han Chinese at Beijing, Xi'an, and Kunming and showed their mutual genetic relationships and also their genetic affinities for other Asians.…”

“…The distinct advantage of the β-globin gene cluster approach is that different populations from different studies are easily comparable since the same restriction sites and haplotypes have been widely used. Although many studies using the β-globin gene cluster haplotype have been carried out in a variety of populations in Africa, Europe, America and Asia, only a few northern Chinese ethnic populations have been analyzed 13 14 . In spite of their important roles in origin, migration and evolutionary history of Chinese ethnic populations, a large number of southwestern Chinese minority populations have not been investigated for β-globin gene cluster characteristics and haplotype variation.…”
