Guard Dog II (1969–1970) by Jean Dubuffet is an artwork that shows the characteristics of the artist's l'hourloupe period (1962–1974). This study revealed the materials and manufacturing techniques used by the artist at the time through material analysis of Guard Dog II, and suggested an appropriate conservation treatment method for the work through a cleaning test. Dust, stains, discoloration, cracks, etc. were observed on the surface of the artwork and stains were particularly severe and discoloration required conservation treatment. Prior to treatment, multiple analytical approaches such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography/mass spectrometer were applied to identify the materials of the paint layers and confirm the state of the conservation of the artworks. As a result, it was confirmed that polyurethane paint was used in the artwork, and the pigment used for each color was also identified. For the stable conservation treatment of the artwork, the chromaticity, glossiness and workability of the cleaning materials were evaluated, and it was found that isopropyl alcohol and nonionic surfactant were suitable for cleaning. The conservation treatment was performed based on results from the cleaning test, and the artwork was restored cleanly. Since most of the existing research on cleaning methods has been focused on painting, this study contributes to the conservation of sculptures by suggesting cleaning methods suitable for three-dimensional colored objects. Article highlights The materials and production techniques used in Jean Dubuffet, Guard Dog II were confirmed. As cleaning materials for deteriorated artworks, isopropyl alcohol and non-ionic surfactants are effective. Hydrogels are not suitable for this work due to the type and characteristics of the gels.

Outdoor sculptures of modern art works are being damaged and deteriorated as they are exposed to the outdoor environment due to the nature of exhibition in the outdoor environment, but secure of basic data through the measures for conservation and advanced researches still remain in the early stage. The surface of “Conversion” which is exhibited in the Busan Cheonmasan Sculpture Park has been exfoliated and deteriorated due to outdoor exhibition for a long time, so systematic conservation and management of works are considered necessary. Prior to the conservation and management, this study conducted observation of cross section, analysis of inorganic components, FT-IR, Raman and Py-GC/Mass analysis to examine the nature and type of paints used for the work through a scientific analysis. As a result of analysis, paints used for the “Conversion” include paint mixed with silvery aluminium powder and white pigment, reddish paint mixed with toluidine red, bluish paint that mixed prussian blue and titanium white and mixture of phthalocyanine blue and titanium white. The result is expected to be used as basic data for selecting materials necessary for conservative treatment of and establishing a plan for conservative treatment of the “Conversion”.

A Comparative Analysis on the Material Properties of Paintings in Modern Buildings: Focusing on Seoul Weather Station

In this study, scientific analysis(cross-section and component analysis) was conducted by selecting paint samples painted on the window frames and walls of the Seoul Weather Station. The color of the window frame is reddish brown and green. The reddish brown is mainly red iron oxide(Fe2O3), mixed with titanium white(TiO2), and in some layers, red lead oxide(Pb3O4) or lead(II) chromate(PbCrO4) is identified, and the green pigment is considered organic pigments. The resin used in the window frame is Alkyd Resin. The color of the wall is divided into pale blue green, white, and ivory colors, and the white color of the wall is calcium carbonate(CaCO3) and titanium white(TiO2), and the pale blue green is the phthalocyanine green. It is determined that paint containing acrylic resin was used for the inner wall. The characteristics of paint were compared and considered with the walls of the Seoul Weather Station, the columns of the Grand Greenhouse of Changgyeonggung Palace, and the outer wall of Busan Songjeong Station. White paint, a common color identified in the three buildings, is identified as two types of paint mixed with zinc White(ZnO) and calcium carbonate(CaCO3), and titanium white(TiO2) and calcium carbonate(CaCO3). It seems that the orange paint uses red lead oxide(Pb3O4) or Lead(II) chromate(PbCrO4) and the green paint uses organic pigments. Based on the above research results, paint painted on buildings is believed to have been painted several times after the building was built, and natural science research should be carried out to determine the history.
