Characterisation of uropathogenic Escherichia coli from children with urinary tract infection in different countries

Abstract: Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) carry many virulence factors, including those involved in long-term survival in the urinary tract. However, their prevalence and role among UPEC causing urinary tract infection (UTI) in children is not well studied. To further understand the virulence characteristics of these bacteria, we investigated the prevalence of antibiotic resistance, antigen 43 genes, curli and cellulose among UPEC in children from different countries. Isolates (n = 337) from five countries were te… Show more

“…Species identification was first performed at the hospitals at which samples were collected. Thereafter, E. coli identification was confirmed using the Vitek 2 GramNegative Identification Card (bioMérieux, Marcy l'Etoile, France), as previously described (21). Vitek screening and all subsequent tests in this study were performed at the Department of Clinical Microbiology, Karolinska University Hospital.…”

“…PCR amplification of virulence factor genes. A modified boiling method was used to extract whole-cell DNA from E. coli isolates (21). One or two colonies of bacteria grown on blood agar were suspended in 100 l sterile deionized water and boiled at 99°C.…”
