Characterisation of the EM disturbances affecting the safety of the railway communication systems

Abstract: To insure interoperability of the transeuropean trains, new transmission systems (GSMR, Eurobalise) are developed in order to permit communications between trains and control centres. These systems have to be available and safe from an electromagnetic point of view, but the normalized methods to characterize electromagnetic noise in railway environment are not convenient for these applications. This paper presents new experimental methods to characterize the electromagnetic noise on board trains which are stud… Show more

“…In order to optimize the detection of the transient disturbances, the analysis window width used has to be adjusted to the duration of these disturbances. In the GSM-R frequency band, this duration is approximately 20 ns [17]. However, the use of this very short window width induces a poor frequency resolution and the spreading of the signal power over a wide frequency band.…”

“…The transient disturbances used in this study are synthesized signals whose characteristics are based on in situ measurements in the GSM-R frequency band presented in [17]. They last 20 ns and are created using a double exponential waveform modulated by a 923 MHz frequency, which is the center frequency of the European GSM-R allocated band.…”

“…In recent decades, the EMD from OLPC are usually investigated in three aspects: 1) Measurement of EMD from OLPC. As far as the measurement of electrical characteristics of EMD from OLPC, both measurement on-site and in laboratory are studied [6][7][8][9] . Indeed, the literatures mentioned above care about the characteristics of arcing, radiated characteristics and the hazards of the sensitive equipment brought by EMD.…”

“…Another example that is in the literature and has a huge effect in the proper behaviour of the railway system is the transient coupled to the GSM-Railway system [31,32,41,51]. This GSM-R interference case is a critical example due to the system is related to the safety of the passengers [24,27]. GSM-R system provides information about rolling stock position, etc.…”
