Characterisation of potato virus Y isolates from Iran

Abstract: A survey of Potato virus Y (PVY) was conducted in cultivated fields in six Iranian provinces between January 2005 to July 2007. Two hundred samples from potato and tomato were collected and analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for potyviruses. Almost one fourth of the samples were found to be infected by PVY. Analysis of these PVY-positive samples using three monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) facilitating the simultaneous detection of three main strains namely the ordinary (PVY(O)), strain (PVY(N))… Show more

“…Our analysis revealed that PVY O and PVY NTN were predominant strains in Iran. Comparing results of this study with those published earlier (Pourrahim et al, 2007;Hosseini et al, 2011) suggested that during the past decade the prevalence of PVY NTN was signifi cantly increased within Iranian PVY population.…”

“…Based on the host range, symptomatology and serological traits, PVY O , PVY NW , PVY C , PVY N and PVY NTN strains have been recognized in potato fi elds of Iran. Furthermore, the sequence of P1, coat protein (CP) and 3' UTR of some of the Iranian PVY isolates has been reported (Hosseini et al, 2011).…”

“…and the use of non-certified virus infected seed. In current study, the ordinary strain of PVY was detected and there is need for further investigations of different PVY isolates as its epidemiology is directly related to different strains ( Hosseini et al, 2011 ). PVA infection is often symptomless in most of the potato cv.…”

“…A few studies have dealt with PVY from Iran (20), but to the best of our knowledge there is no report concerning expression of the virus CP gene in E. coli. Analysis showed that the CP can be efficiently expressed via pET21a (+) in E. coli (Figure 2A).…”
