“…SSR markers have been widely used in molecular genotyping and genetic diversity analysis of sugarcane because of their locus-specificity and polymorphic nature (Cordeiro et al, 2000;Pan et al, 2003aPan et al, , 2006Glynn et al, 2009).…”

“…With the advances of sugarcane microsatellite (SSR) DNA genotyping technology, the sugarcane breeders are now able to efficiently and accurately determine the genetic identity of sugarcane varieties and reveal any sugarcane clone misidentifications (Pan et al, 2003a,b). The International Sugarcane Microsatellite Consortium (ISMC) has designed 221 microsatellite markers based on the sugarcane genomic DNA sequences (Cordeiro et al, 2000). In 2006, Pan et al used these 221 microsatellite markers for germplasm evaluation and fingerprinting of USA cultivars.…”

“…However, some bands were amplified from the F1 hybrid but not from parents. The reason could be the complex heredity background of each plant heterosis [28][29][30] . Additionally, this residual heterozygosity could account for the occasional occurrence that some true hybrids exhibited the absence of the female or www.scienceasia.org male specific-parent markers with RAPD primers.…”

“…The 40 SSR primers previously mapped for sugarcane by the International Sugarcane Microsatellite Consortium (Cordeiro et al, 2000;Singh et al, 2008;Oliveira et al, 2009) were synthesized by Invitrogen Technologies Corporation (USA) and used with 5 DNA samples from each sugarcane variety. After screening the 40 SSR primers, a set of 17 SSR primers (Table 2) was selected for further analysis.…”

“…The marker systems that are used in studies of sugarcane include microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSR) (Cordeiro et al, 2000Cordeiro and Henry, 2001;Pan et al, 2003;Pinto et al, 2004). Considerable advances have been made in the area of sugarcane genetics through the use of microsatellite markers.…”
