A total of 550 meat samples (300 minced beef and 250 chicken meat) marketed in Zagazig City, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt, as well as 150 human stool samples were examined for Shiga toxin producing E. coli. Results revealed that the isolation rates of E. coli O157:H7 versus non-O157 were 1.7% versus 2.3% in minced beef, 0.8% versus 2% in chicken meat and 0.7% versus 2.7% in human stools. Other identified serotypes were including O111:H8 (25%), O26:H11 (20.8%), O55:H7 (16.7%) and O113:H21 (4.2%). Virulence associated genes were identified in E. coli serotypes, stx1 and stx2 were characterized in 16.7% and 62.5% of the isolates, while, eaeA and hlyA genes were identified in 50% and 70.8% of the examined serotypes, respectively. Genotyping of E. coli O157:H7 serotype from different sources using Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) fingerprinting revealed heterogenicity of the isolates, however, human and minced beef isolates were grouped in the same cluster indicating potential transmission of infection from contaminated beef to human consumers. In conclusion, ERIC-PCR is a highly discriminatory, reliable and cost-effective tool for tracing sources of infection with bacteria. Public health education and application of strict hygienic measures during slaughtering, transportation and preparation of meat are essential to minimize the risk of contamination and transmission of infection to consumers.

, a total of 1094 faecal swab samples were collected from cattle at different age at 4 farms in North Bulgaria: Okorsh, Slavyanovo (Popovo municipality), Dobri dol and Trem. Out of them, 36 coli strains (3.3%) positive in the E. coli O:157 antiserum agglutination test and identified by the BBL CRYSTAL identification system as belonging to the E. coli O:157 serotype were isolated. The distribution of isolates was as followed: 5 (0.5%) E. coli O:157 strains at the Okorsh dairy cattle farm, 7 (0.6%) E. coli isolates at the Slavyanovo dairy farm, 16 (1.5%) isolates at the Dobri dol farm and 8 (0.7%) isolates at the Trem farm. Colibacteria exhibited 100% sensitivity to oxyimino-cephalosporins, gentamicin and enrofloxacin, and were resistant to ampicillin (19.4%) and tetracycline (41.6%). From the 15 strains resistant to tetracycline, 11 were isolated from the cows at Dobri dol, while the other 4 originated from the other three farms. The 7 ampicillin-resistant E. coli isolates were detected only at the Dobri dol cattle farm.

In South Africa, individuals who reside in most rural areas do not have access to portable water and they rely on untreated water from boreholes. This exposes them to disease causing microorganisms. The aim of the study was to isolate and determine the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of enterococcus in ground water from three rural communities in the Mmabatho area, North-West Province of South Africa. Enterococcus selective agar (ESA) was used for selective isolation of Enterococci species. The identities of the isolates were determined using preliminary (Gram staining, catalase test, oxidase test) and confirmatory (API 20 Strep and the Prolex TM Streptococcal Grouping Rapid Latex Agglutination test kit) test. Two hundred and twenty five presumptive isolates were screened and 139 were positively identified. Three enterococcus species were identified; Enterococcus faecium (71.2%), Enterococcus faecalis (23.0%) and Enterococcus avium (5.8%). A large proportion of the isolates (73.4%) belonged to the Lands field group D serotype when compared to the G group (26.6%). A large proportion of the isolates (75 to 100%) from Ramosadi and Seweding were resistant to vancomycin, penicillin G, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, oxytetracycline, amoxycilin and sulphamethoxazole. Isolates from Mothlabeng showed little resistance against these drugs. The identification of vancomycin-resistant enterococci was a cause for concern since they pose a severe challenge to the medical profession. The natural hosts of E. faecium and E. faecalis are humans and animals. From these results, it is proposed that the isolates could have originated from contamination of these water sources with faeces since most of the boreholes are constructed near the pit toilets.
