Characterisation of camel breeding practices in the Ansongo Region, Mali

Abstract: Despite its importance in Mali's economy, camel breeding in the country remains poorly documented, impeding effective policy-making in this regard. This study consisted in a 3-month survey and aimed at characterising camel breeding systems in Ansongo, in the region of Gao, Mali. It highlights the diversity of strategies adopted by breeders and their evolutions. Supplementary feeding and veterinary care were seldom practised. In zones close to the Niger River, cattle were substituted to camels. Transhumance rou… Show more

“…The observation that camels recover by expelling big volumes of mucus has probably lead Sahrawi herders to develop treatments aiming to achieve this as a sign of recovery. Similar practices can be found among the Tuareg, who also force camels to run in order to promote nasal drainage and thus mucus expulsion [ 53 , 54 ]. As an alternative treatment, cauterization is practiced on the nose and/or at its sides, at the anterior triangle of the neck under the mandible and/or on the throat, or on the chest.…”

“…However, the mean age at first calving (5.8 years) and the calving interval (2.7 years) obtained in this study are similar to those reported by Vias et al (2006) in Niger, that is, respectively 5.5 and 2.4 years. An age at first calving between 5 and 6 years is reported in different ecological zones of Ansongo region, Mali (Traoré et al, 2014).…”
