Characterisation of algicidal bacterial exometabolites against the lipid-accumulating diatom Skeletonema sp.

Abstract: a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f oMicroalgae are of increasing interest due to their occurrence in the environment as harmful algal blooms and as a source of biomass for the production of fine and bulk chemicals. A method for the low cost disruption of algal biomass for environmental remediation or bioprocessing is desirable. Naturally-occurring algal lytic agents from bacteria could provide a cost-effective and environmentally desirable solution. A screen for algal lytic agents against a range of marine mi… Show more

“…They are able to outgrow native bacterial communities in coastal areas ( 63 ) and degrade a variety of algal-derived molecules such as silica ( 64 ), nutrients released during decaying phytoplankton blooms ( 65 ), and a variety of diatom-derived polysaccharides ( 66 , 67 ). More specifically, A. macleodii competes with diatoms for nitrate ( 68 ), while closely related Alteromonas species contribute to the lysis of dinoflagellates ( 69 ) and produce an array of algicidal compounds effective against diatoms and other phytoplankton lineages ( 70 72 ). The placement of A. macleodii F12 within the A .…”

“…Furthermore, this study demonstrates for the first time the antibacterial activity of bacterial strains affiliated to the genus Maribacter. Algicidal activity of Maribacter isolates has been reported (Wang et al 2016), but bioactivity of this genus of the Flavobacteriaceae family is virtually unexplored.…”

“…Structural analysis of algicidal substances has been a hot but difficult area in recent years (Talaat, 2019). A few algicidal substances have been isolated, mainly including macromolecules such as peptides, chitinase (Wang et al, 2016) luciferin (Zhang et al, 2016b), triterpene saponins (Luo et al, 2013), rhamnolipids (Xu et al, 2020), amino acids (Quan et al, 2021) and tryptamine (Zhang et al, 2016a).…”
