Character selection in relation to the numerical taxonomy of some male Diaspididae (Homoptera: Coccoidea)

Abstract: A quantitative comparison of the classifications of 24 species of male Diaspididae by principal component and principal coordinate analysis was extended to allow the comparison of classifications based on selected subsets of the 101 available characters. It was shown that subsets of 25-28 characters could be chosen numerically and used to construct classifications that resembled very closely the classitication based on the reference set of characters. The conclusions are discussed in relation to other views on… Show more

“…The taxonomy of the Coccoidea is still firmly based on female morphology, but males are thought to represent ancestral affinities better, particularly at higher levels of classification (Boratynski, 1970), although they can be of use at an intrafamiial level (Boratynski and Dav ies. 1971; Davies and Boratynski. 1979;Davies, 1981).…”

“…The results obtained in this research from utilizing cluster analyses ofthe presaturation data emphasizes when several mathematical treatments ofthe data were utilized, the results while different were complementary. The research performed by Davies and Boratynski (1979) emphasized the importance of utilizing several cladistical analyses of taxonomic data before conclusions are formulated concerning taxonomic relationships.…”
