In this paper we shall show how this theory can be extended to particles and frames of reference which move faster than light. Sobre a necessidade de se formular uma teoria dos táquionsNo fim do ano passado, cientistas do Centro Europeu de Pesquisas Nucleares (CERN) divulgaram os resultados de um experimento [1] no qual neutrinos mais rápidos que a luz tinham sido supostamente detectados. Coincidentemente, cerca de uma semana antes da divulgação desse resultado, o autor apresentou na 7 a Semana da Física da UFSCar [2] uma palestra justamente sobre o tema, mais especificamente, sobre como a teoria da relatividade poderia ser estendida de modo a se aplicar também a referenciais e partículas mais rápidas que a luz.2 Essa palestra gerou naquela ocasião grande interesse por parte de professores e alunos, e esse interesse foi ainda mais amplificado após a divulgação da notícia comentada acima. Desde então, o autor recebeu vários incentivos para que colocasse as ideias lá apresentadas na forma de um artigo, o que por fim resultou no presente texto.Embora estudos mais recentes [3] contestem os resultados do experimento [1],é oportuno mencionar que existem outras evidências experimentais sobre a existência de fenômenos superluminais na natureza [4].Além do mais, somos da opinião de que o estudo teórico dos táquions pode fornecer uma melhor compreensão da própria teoria da relatividade, bem como de alguns temas centrais em mecânica quântica. De fato, táquions são cogitados em algumas das mais modernas teorias da física, como por exemplo em teoria de supercordas ou em teoria quântica de campos. Acreditamos assim que o estudo teórico dos táquions seja amplamente justificado, mesmo que os resultados do experimento OPERA não estejam corretos.Tentativas de se estender a teoria da relatividade já foram,é claro, propostas por diversos cientistas, muito embora as publicações originais possam não ser de fácil acesso.3 Dentre as formulações propostas, destacamos os trabalhos de Recami [5] e colaboradores, cujos resultados, embora deduzidos através de uma matemática bem mais avançada que a empregada aqui, coincidem em sua grande parte com os nossos.
