Channel estimation and BER studies for an underwater acoustic OFDM system using time reversal mirror in shallow waters

Abstract: Underwater acoustic communication in shallow-waters could greatly benefit from using multicarrier communication with time-reversal mirror as a signal-focusing tool. The advantages of combining OFDM with TRM for telemetry are investigated from a channel perspective. A channel estimation algorithm specially designed for TRM-OFDM is presented. Bit error rate characteristics and channel-usage efficiency are studied in a TRM-OFDM context. Link-level simulations for a Pekeris channel, using OFDM modulation with TRM … Show more

“…Even with imperfect focusing, time-reversed communication makes sense because the equalizer may be far less complex than in arbitrary ocean channels. The application of MC communication with timereversal mirror (TRM) as a signal-focusing tool for UWA channel was proposed in [64]. A channel estimation algorithm specially designed for TRM OFDM was presented.…”

“…Equalization is a one of the techniques to resist the distortion. Adaptive equalizations are the widely used equalizations in underwater acoustic communication [7]- [10]. The underwater acoustic communication channel exhibits a long delay spread because of a large amount of multipath arrivals resulting from surface and bottom interactions.…”
