Changing spring snow cover dynamics and early season forage availability affect the behavior of a large carnivore

Abstract: Changing environmental conditions are altering how animals interact with their habitats (Schmitz, Post, Burns, & Johnston, 2003). In many cases, directional changes in environmental conditions owing to changing climatic conditions are resulting in altered habitats in space and time which in turn affect animal behavior

“…The start of the seed availability time was determined by the end of snowmelt in spring because after the snow melt seeds (remaining from previous year's harvest) could be easily dug out from the ground. Following the method of Rickbeil, Coops [49] we used the MODIS Terra Snow Cover daily 500 m spatial resolution product MOD10A1 to measure the different degree of snowmelt (i.e., the onset and the end of snowmelt). We first created a time-series to capture the daily percent of snow cover (from day 1 to day 210) for each stopover and breeding site, for each track.…”
