Changing mortality rates and causes of death for HIV‐infected individuals living in Southern Alberta, Canada from 1984 to 2003

Abstract: ObjectivesTo examine changes over a 2-year period in both the mortality rate and the causes of death in a geographically defined HIV-infected population. MethodsA database search of primary care information for the dates and causes of death for all patients documented with HIV infection and living in Southern Alberta between 1984 and 2003 was undertaken. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were obtained. Causes of death were then individually confirmed by reviewing the patients' hospital charts, auto… Show more

“…Co-infection by HCV and HBV in HIV-positive individuals is common because these viruses share similar modes of transmission (167). In HIV patients undergoing HAART treatment with longer survival rates, HCC due to HCV and HBV infections is a significant problem (21).…”

“…In spite of the widespread access to HAART, the incidence of death owing to AIDS-defining illnesses such as TB is still high in some countries, especially when the infection is diagnosed late. [14][15][16] Therefore, all the interventions should be monitored with appropriate methods and indicators to constitute an integrated surveillance system of HIV care. Hence, molecular imaging with FDG-PET/CT is needed to provide evidence-based data to optimize quality of care and improve survival.…”
