Abstract:The effects of direct contact with nature on pro-environmental attitudes, values and knowledge were assessed by taking college students on field trips at Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (PETAR), and applying a system of directed activities developed throughout 16 years. The changes in knowledge, values and attitudes were evaluated in these students (experimental groups) and other students who were not exposed to the field trips (control groups) through questionnaires which were applied before (pre-tests) and after the trip (post-tests). Meaningful differences were verified between the control and the experimental groups, as well as discrepancies between the pre-and post-tests applied to the experimental groups -a clear indication that the direct contact with nature affected the positioning of the students towards environmental matters. These outcomes reinforce the idea of the importance of contact with nature as a way of implementing pro-environmental behaviors.Keywords: Environmental education. Field trip. Exposure to natural. Resumo: Os efeitos do contato direto com a natureza nos conhecimentos, nas intenções e atitudes pró-ambientais foram avaliados durante viagens com estudantes universitários ao Parque Estadual Turístico doAlto Ribeira (PETAR), onde foram realizadas atividades dirigidas desenvolvidas ao longo de 16 anos. As mudanças nos conhecimentos, valores e atitudes foram avaliadas nesses alunos (grupos experimentais) e em outros, que não participaram das viagens (grupos-controle), por meio de questionários que foram aplicados antes (pré-testes) e depois da viagem (pós-testes). Diferenças significativas foram verificadas entre os grupos-controle e experimentais, bem como discrepâncias entre os pré e pós-testes aplicados aos grupos experimentais -uma clara indicação de que o contato direto com a natureza afetou o posicionamento dos alunos em relação às questões ambientais. Estes resultados reforçam a ideia da importância do contato com a natureza como forma de implementar comportamentos pró-ambientais.Palavras-chave: Educação ambiental. Viagem a campo. The goal of this paper is to analyze barriers that discourage consumers from buying environmentally friendly products, and consequently suggest principles for effective consumer-oriented programmes of environmental education. It is based on a qualitative analysis of six focus groups (N=39) that were carried out with respondents from different consumer groups (mothers on maternity leave, pensioners, administrators, businessmen, university students, and environmental consultants). The research suggested that a lack of trust in the concept of sustainable consumption and consumers' personal history play important roles in consumer decision-making. In the final part, the article discusses the implications of these findings for environmental education. Vychází z kvalitativní analýzy šesti ohniskových skupin (N=39), které byly provedeny se zástupci různých skupin spotřebitelů (matky na mateřské dovolené, senioři, úředníci, podnikatelé, studenti vysoké škole a ekoporadci). Výsledky ukazují na podobné motivy, které se objevily ve všech skupinách. Výzkum naznačil, že důležitou roli ve spotřebitelském rozhodování hraje nedostatek důvěry v koncept udržitelné spotřeby a osobní spotřebitelská historie. Respondenti předpokládají, že za cenu větší časové a finanční investice dostanou často dražší a méně funkční výrobky, o jejichž environmentální příznivosti navíc často pochybují. Protože současně nezpochybňují důležitost odpovědného environmentálního chování, je pro ně východiskem tzv. "přijatelně udržitelné spotřebitelské chování", podle kterého zohledňují environmentální aspekty v té oblasti spotřebitelského chování, která je pro ně snadno dostupná, zatímco je ignorují v jiných.

“…Environmental psychology draws on environmental ethics in an attempt to explain why certain individuals, who, for example, grew up in the same village next to the forest and witnessed its destruction, will gladly accept the job for the logging company clearing the remaining trees, while others will take on 'tree hugging. ' Developmental studies of people's environmental behaviors and attitudes shed some light upon this altruistic predisposition to nature by focusing on different social and psychological 'entry variables' (Hungerford and Volk 1990). The hypothesis that the early childhood encounters with nature are crucial for the development of positive environmental values is supported by retrospective reports of environmentalists, which are replete with stories of memorable encounters with pristine nature (Kahn and Kellert 2002;Korhonen and Lappalainen 2004;Louv 2005;Wells and Lekies 2006).…”
