Changing face of tinea capitis in Europe

Abstract: With the evolving organism profile across Europe, obtaining an accurate diagnosis and species identification is crucial. Using more than one sampling method followed by rapid species identification techniques will facilitate this. Although there are no changes in specific product license to include children, the production of a child-friendly formulation of terbinafine will contribute to improved compliance.

“…1 The presence of Microsporum canis, the most prevalent causative organism in Europe, 2 is usually easy to diagnose: it classically presents with a patch of alopecia, a scaly plaque, and a positive finding under Wood lamp examination. An increase in anthropophilic organisms is widely reported, 3 mostly among immigrant populations and associated with a noninflammatory TC, which may present with little alopecia or scale and a negative finding under Wood lamp examination.…”

“…It is particularly common in the USA being responsible for as much as 21.1-44.9% of all dermatophyte infections (1,2). Of all European countries only in the UK and Croatia the infections are not very rare (14)(15)(16). T tonsurans predominantly causes tinea capitis.…”

“…Thus, we observed that the occurrence of T. tonsurans is more frequently reported in countries like the USA, United Kingdom, Haiti and Japan. 4,5,6,7 In Brazil, we observed predominance of isolation of this fungus in the North and Northeast regions, but it is also isolated as agent of scalp tinea in different regions of the country, as the Southeast and South. 1,2,3,8,9 This report presents a case of family microepidemic by T. tonsurans involving all of the members of a family where, despite excellent hygienic conditions, the fungus remained viable for several years.…”
