Reverse engineering can give new challenges for diagnosis and facial treatments, offering 3D measurements, impossible to obtain only few years ago, in terms of richness of information, precision, accuracy and reliability. In this paper the main aspects and methods for skull and facial scanning and measurement are analyzed, considering volumetric methods (CT, MRI) and surface approaches (laser scanning, structured light and photogrammetry). These latter are particularly interesting because they avoid exposing the patient to ionising radiation and to any biological risk. The EU directives in fact require minimisation of radiographic exposure, that will be in the near future justified only for real diseases, but not for aesthetic treatments and surgery, orthodontics, and malocclusions. Photogrammetry is very promising for the digital reconstruction of human faces; it seems to offer the best compromise with respect to realistic and accurate reproduction, processing time, simplicity and cost of equipment. New software platforms have been developed to integrate the information acquired using different tools: photogrammetry, CT/Cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT), laser scans of dental cast study models. In this way a powerful multi-user database system can be realised to track the patient's imaging history throughout the treatment cycle and to forecast the growth and the results of the treatments.

There are many complex surfaces in complex products, such as the leading edge of the airplane wing and the blade of a propeller. These quasi-cylindrical surfaces are deliberately designed according to functional requirements. The verification algorithm of quasi-cylindrical surfaces is the foundation for a leading edge shape control. Traditional indices are not fit for the quasi-cylindrical surface verification because there are no distinct features in these surfaces. An efficient and robust verification algorithm based on an equivalent radius and the Gaussian image for a quasi-cylindrical surface verification is proposed in this article. Gaussian image is employed to determine the principal direction of scanned datapoints. Three-dimensional wavelet filtering method is used to conduct datapoints processing because of its excellent threedimensional information-processing capability. Good performance is obtained in the process of the leading edge verification by the demonstration of principal direction determining and circle fitting. The results of this research will enhance the understanding of the quasi-cylindrical surface evaluation, especially the leading edge verification, and help systematically improving the verification and validation of aerodynamic performance where the as-designed shape of the leading edge is compared with the shape tested in the wind tunnel.

The effects of powder spray on surface topography and gauge repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) of a stereovision measurement system are investigated for specular machined components. Results obtained in the micro-scale laser profilometer and macro-scale stereovision measurement of powder sprayed surfaces are correlated. Three artifacts, two step gauges and a gauge ball, all with specular surfaces, are utilized to evaluate this optical, non-contact measurement method. While the use of powder spray has demonstrated the reduction of the measurement noise of the stereovision system, as shown in this study, the surface topography of powder spray is not suitable for µm-level precision measurements with the powder droplets as high as 98.4 µm. The accuracy and gauge R&R of the system for a 32 µm step height are 9.4 and 4.6 µm, respectively. A case study of flatness measurement of an automotive engine head combustion deck surface is conducted.
