Changes to taxonomy and the International Code of Virus Classification and Nomenclature ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (2018)

Abstract: This article lists the changes to virus taxonomy approved and ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses in February 2018. A total of 451 species, 69 genera, 11 subfamilies, 9 families and one new order were added to the taxonomy. The current totals at each taxonomic level now stand at 9 orders, 131 families, 46 subfamilies, 803 genera and 4853 species. A change was made to the International Code of Virus Classification and Nomenclature to allow the use of the names of people in taxon names… Show more

“…Multicomponent genome organizations are relatively common among viruses that infect plants and fungi, but no multicomponent animal viruses have been described (Fulton, 1980; King et al, 2011). The dose-response kinetics of GCXV indicate that at least three different particles are required for plaque formation.…”

“…Differences are seen in the nature of the genetic material (single or double-stranded, positive or negative-sense, linear or circular), the number of genome segments (from 1 to 12) and the manner in which multi-segmented genomes are packaged (together or separately) (King et al, 2011). These differences can have important functional implications for key processes such as gene expression, transmission and genetic recombination.…”

“…However, our catalogue of the virosphere is in its infancy, and there are still great gains to be made from 'molecular natural history'. Fewer than 5 thousand viruses have received formal taxonomic recognition (King et al 2018) and only around 15 thousand have even been named informally ( Figure 1A). This is less comprehensive than the 17 th century view of plant diversity, even in absolute terms (ca.…”

“…Usually their hosts are rodents, although some will also infect other mammals and humans [1, 6, 7]. First, human cardiovirus, Vilyuisk virus, was isolated in 1960 and characterized as a divergent Theiler’s virus in 1992 [8].…”
