Changes of soil water regime types in the area adjacent to the Tomisławice open-cast lignite mine (central Poland)

Abstract: This work presents the results of a four-year study on the determination of the range of soil groundwater drainage caused by the operation of the Tomis³awice lignite open-cast mine. The performed analyses covered the area of 9600 ha which included 24 villages. It was found that operation of Tomis³awice open-cast mine caused noticeable changes of soil groundwater level in the areas adjacent to the excavation. It consequently resulted in considerable changes in soil water regimes types on grassland areas but it … Show more

“…measurements of the groundwater level were conducted. The usefulness of such measurements was confirmed in previous studies (Owczarzak et al, 2008(Owczarzak et al, , 2017. These parameters provide key information that is used to infer the impact of the excavation operation on the surrounding areas.…”

“…Smaller fluctuations most often result from seasonal changes that result from climatic conditions, e.g. precipitation, temperature, evaporation (Owczarzak et al, 2017). Therefore, if there is a rapid decrease in the soil-ground water level after the implementation of the mine drainage barrier, this will indicate that the mine is the cause of this change (see Rząsa et al, 1999).…”

“…In the ongoing discussion, the most popular subject is the impact of open-pit mining on the level of soil moisture. Most of the authors [130][131][132][133][134][135][136] claim that there is no negative impact of cones of depression on the upper layers of the terrain and they concentrate on the negative effects of the cones on deeper layers. However, a significant decline in levels of groundwater is noticed [137].…”
