“…The TSH RIA system was developed using the antiserum raised against C-terminal peptide synthesized in accordance with the amino acid sequence deduced from the TSH β-subunit (TSH-β) cDNA (Okada et al, 2000(Okada et al, , 2004. It became possible to evaluate the hormonal levels and ascertain the role of pituitary hormones in metamorphosis using the RIA systems, along with the cDNA clones of PRL (Takahashi et al, 1990(Takahashi et al, , 1993, PRL receptor (PRLR) (Hasunuma et al, 2004), TSH-β (Okada et al, 2000), and proopiomelanocortin (Aida et al, 1999). Some unexpected findings encountered during the course of these studies are also reviewed in this article: Removal of the primordium of the adenohypophysis was often performed using B. japonicus embryos.…”

“…In this respect, a wealth of interesting data has been obtained in neuroendocrine research on amphibians, e.g. as to the plasticity of behavior (Denver, 1997), the identification of novel neuropeptides (Chartrel et al, 1999), their mechanisms of action (Montero et al, 2000;Yon et al, 2001), the structure and development of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system (Jansen et al, 1997;Aida et al, 1999;Kikuyama et al, 1999) and pituitary cell heterogeneity (Gracia-Navarro et al, 1998;Gonzalez de Aguilar et al, 1999) (for refs, śee also Vaudry and Eberle, 1993;Vaudry et al, 1998).…”
