Changes of fatty acids and sterols in apple buds during bud break induced by a plant bioregulator, thidiazuron

Abstract: The effects of N‐phenyl‐N'‐l,2,3,‐thidiazol‐5‐ylurea (thidiazuron; Dropp; SN 49537) on fatty acids of membrane lipids and sterol content in apple (Malus domestica Borkh cv. Golden Delicious) buds associated with bud break and bud development were determined. The predominant fatty acids in the membrane lipids of apple buds were palmitic acid (C16:0), linoleic acid (C18:2) and linolenic acid (C18:3). β‐Sitosterol and sitosteryl ester were the predominant sterols. An accumulation of unsaturated polar membrane fat… Show more

“…Recently, studying apple bud break, Wang and his co-workers (Wang et al 1991a(Wang et al , 1991b found changes in key enzymes and other regulatory elements in response to TDZ. There are further indications that TDZ also induces accumulation of unsaturated polar membrane fatty acids (Wang and Faust 1988). This line of research strongly suggests that TDZ is actively involved in inducing metabolic changes and that it is not a simple substitute of purine-based cytokinins.…”

“…Wang et al (1991) found changes in key enzymes and other regulatory elements in response to TDZ. Wang and Faust (1988) observed that TDZ induces accumulation of unsaturated polar membrane fatty acids, which strongly propose the active involvement of TDZ in inducing metabolic changes and suggested that it is not a simple substitute for purine based cytokinins. Also Sharma et al (2008) analyzed effect of BAP, indole-butyric acid (IBA) and sucrose on shoot regeneration in C. sativus.…”

“…This cold requirement can be overcome by treating the buds with certain plant hormones and growth regulators. We previously reported that the plant bioregulant thidiazuron (N-phenyl-N'-l,2,3-thidiazol-5-ylurea) has the capacity to release apple lateral buds from dormancy and to induce metabolic changes (Wang and Faust 1988a, Wang et al 1986. A number of studies demonstrated that the physiological alterations produced in plants due to different causes are related to enzymes that catalyze oxidative reactions.…”
