Changes of Blood Lipid Metabolism in Elderly Patients with Advanced Gastric Cancer and Its Clinical Significance

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the contents of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in peripheral blood of elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer, and to analyze their relationship with clinicopathological features. Methods: Ninety-eight patients older than 60 years and pathologically confirmed adenocarcinoma who were hospitalized in Hebei General Hospital from January 2017 to September 2020 were selected as the gastric cancer group; meanwhile, 100 healthy subjects in the same period were selected as controls. Their peripheral blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations were measured, respectively. Results: The levels of TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C in the gastric cancer group were significantly lower than those in the healthy control group (P<0.05); the serum TC level in the gastric cancer group was negatively correlated with age, lymph node metastasis, and TNM stage (P<0.05); the serum TG level was significantly lower in those aged ≥ 70 years and with lymph node metastasis, and the serum TG level was higher in those with positive HER2 expression than in those with negative HER2 expression (P<0.05); the serum HDL-C level was higher in gastric cancer patients with tumor diameter ≥ 5cm than in those with tumor diameter < 5cm (P<0.05); the serum LDL-C level was higher in those without lymph node metastasis and stage III patients than in those with lymph node metastasis and stage IV (P<0.05), and in addition, the family history of gastric cancer was statistically significant with TC, TG, and LDL-C (P<0.05). Conclusion: Determination of serum TC, TG, HDL and LDL levels in patients with gastric cancer is helpful to determine the course and prognosis of patients with gastric cancer.
