As a consequence of the growth of the Antarctic ice-sheet during the middle Miocene, a global decrease of temperatures and an associated increase in aridity provoked several environmental changes all around the world. Such environmental variations can be detected in the continental record of the mammalian prey community structure using a synecological approach. Because of the good quality of its faunas, the rich Aragonian vertebrate fossil record from the Madrid Basin (Spain) appears as a good candidate to explore these environmental changes. In order to analyse the climatic evolution of the Iberian Peninsula associated to the Global Cooling Event, two classic palaeosynecological methodologies (cenograms and body size diversity), based on body-size community structure, were applied to 6 fossil sites from the Madrid Basin, ranging over 2 million years (15.5 -13.5 Ma). To establish a comparative framework, we used the ecological faunal data from 100 modern localities uniformly distributed all around the world. Our palaeoenvironmental inference is based on multivariate discriminant analysis of the dataset containing both modern and fossil mammals. Finally, we can conclude that the Aragonian mammalian assemblage from the Madrid Basin showed a predominance of semiarid environments with pulses of higher aridity in biozones Dc, E and F associated with the Global Cooling Event of the middle Miocene.

Carnivore mammals (Carnivora, Mammalia) constitute a significant component of the Spanish Neogene faunas, not so much due to their fossil abundance, which is generally low, but rather because of their high degree of taxonomic diversity. We assessed their evolutionary dynamics from the fossil record of Iberian carnivores using per-taxon rates of origination, extinctions and turnover combined with a recent approach for removing the sampling signal from diversity curves. Our analysis interval covers most of the Neogene and the early Pleistocene (MN 2 to MN 17), spanning from around 21.6 to 1.8 Ma. We identified six carnivore associations by applying factor analysis to our data. The diversification pattern shows four origination episodes: MN4, MN7/8, MN12 and MN14. We also identified four extinction episodes. The first two are coincident with the onset of the MN 4 and MN7/8 faunas. The last two extinction episodes take place during MN9, coinciding with the Mid Vallesian Crisis (MVC), and MN13, co-occurring with the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC). Two major turnover pulses are recognised during MN4 and MN14, the turnover rate remaining moderately high between MN6 and MN13. We suggest that the pattern observed might be primarily triggered by the biogeographic and climatic shifts that took place during the Neogene.

IntroducciónPerissodactyla es el orden de mamíferos que incluye a los actuales caballos, rinocerontes y tapires, junto con otras formas extintas más o menos relacionadas con ellos. Los restos fósiles de perisodáctilos, especialmente de caballos, han sido objeto de estudio clásico en Paleontología dada la abundancia de materiales y la continuidad que presentan en el registro fósil. Esto es aplicable tanto a España como a otras áreas geográficas y son incontables los trabajos científicos referidos a este grupo. Los rinocerontes también son abundantes y están presentes en la mayor parte de los yacimientos neógenos, particularmente del Mioceno. Sin embargo, en comparación con los équidos, se les ha prestado mucha menos atención. Por su parte, los tapires tienen una representación menor y un registro general mucho más restringido. De forma mucho más esporádica, también se encuentran en España representantes del grupo de los calicoterios.La ciencia paleontológica en España se fue desarrollando a finales del siglo XIX, fundamentalmente a la par de los trabajos mineros, a los que se añadían las descripciones de yacimientos y fósiles que se convirtieron en clásicos, por ejemplo, de la paleontología de mamíferos. Centrándonos en esta última especialidad, nombres como Casiano de Prado o Eduardo Hernández-Pacheco son ineludibles a la hora de intentar resumir la historia inicial de los estudios paleontológicos de mamíferos y, entre ellos, de perisodáctilos. Alberdi 2 RESUMEN En el presente trabajo, se realiza una breve historia del estudio de los Perisodáctilos del Neógeno de España. Abarca las distintas vicisitudes de estos estudios desde las primeras citas de su presencia en suelo español durante el siglo XIX hasta nuestros días. Se enfoca principalmente en los representantes de las familias Equidae y Rhinocerothidae, que están ampliamente representadas a lo largo y ancho de la Península y sobre los que hay abundante documentación. Más brevemente, se trata la Familia Tapiridae, cuyo registro es mucho más restringido, y se hace mención de la Familia Chalicotheriidae que, aunque muy escasa, también está presente en la Península Ibérica.Palabras clave: Perissodactyla, Equidae, Rhinocerotidae, Tapiridae, Chalicotheriidae, Neógeno, España.ABSTRACT This paper presents a brief review on the studies of the Order Perissodactyla from the Spanish Neogene. References begin with the first records during the XIX century, and continue until present, summarizing the progress and knowledge of this conspicuous group of mammals in Spain. The paper focuses mainly on families Equidae and Rhinocerotidae, whose remains are very abundant and have a large temporal distribution, giving place to a huge amount of documentation. More scarce references concern families Tapiridae and Chalicotheriidae, owing to their more restricted records.
