Changes in Weight-Related Outcomes Among Adolescents Following Consumer Price Increases of Taxed Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Following the implementation of a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in Mexico in 2014, SSB prices increased by about 10% on average, but differently across cities. It remains unclear how observed SSB price changes are associated with adolescent weight-related outcomes.OBJECTIVE To compare weight-related outcomes among adolescents living in cities with differential SSB price changes before and after the SSB tax was implemented in Mexico. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Associations between di… Show more

“…While our findings on gender differences in obesity prevalence changes in relation to sugar taxes on SSBs are consistent with previous studies[29], it is unclear why the UK SDIL might affect obesity prevalence in girls and boys differently, especially since boys are higher consumers of SSBs[7]. One explanation is that there were factors (e.g.…”

“…Outside of media and social constructs, environmental changes to University dining halls that promote healthy beverage intake by coloring coding choices and advertising healthier options have been successful in increasing water uptake while lowering SSB (Di Sebastiano et al, 2021 ). Taxation on SSB's in some countries has substantially driven down the use of SSB though the improvements on body composition may be small (Gracner et al, 2022 ) with the percentage of taxation, country, socioeconomic status, age, and sex being constructs that affect the effectiveness of SSB taxation (Acton et al, 2021 ).…”

“…A Mexican study assessed whether increasing the price of SSBs was associated with adolescent weight-related outcomes after implementation of the SSB tax. Increased prices were associated with decreased prevalence of excess weight among girls only, mostly in those with higher BMI, and where the price increment due to the tax was greater than 10% ( 190 ). The fact that a higher tax may be more effective has also been suggested by a qualitative study performed in a Detroit suburban middle school that gathered information on how a 20% tax on SSBs would affect adolescent SSB consumption.…”
