Changes in the Woodiness of Rural Areas in Poland In the Years 1995-2016

Abstract: The paper presents changes in the woodiness of rural areas in Poland in the years 1995-2016. The analysis was based on the Annual Geodesic Reports and the National Land Register. It was found that as a result of mainly afforestation of agricultural land and wasteland, the woodiness increased from 28.4% in 1995 to 30.6% in 2016. The rate of changes was spatially diversified, both at the level of voivodeship and communes. Studies have shown progressive spatial concentration of forests in rural areas of Poland. A… Show more

“…Forests dominated the Polish landscape for many centuries [24][25][26][27]. The area of forested land has decreased significantly, mainly as a result of the development of settlements, which has been associated with deforestation of fertile soils and expansion of land used for agriculture, as well as overexploitation of forests due to the high demand for timber [28]. Poland's forest cover at the end of the 18th century stood at about 37% and declined to about 23.1% in 1918, and to 22.2% in 1939.…”

“…The change in forest area is most often associated with the development of both tourist infrastructure as well as the tourist and recreational function of forests. Taking into consideration the subject of this study, the works on the changes in the forest cover in Poland [Nyrek 1997, Ciesielska and Ciesielski 2017, Polna 2017, Falencka-Jabłońska 2017], specific types of landscape [Grzywacz 2002, Polna 2017 or selected regions [Szymura et al 2010, Kunz 2012, Gorajska 2014] seem particularly important. The issues related to deforestation and afforestation [Fonder 2002, Sulewski 2018 as well as the spatial and organizational aspects of shaping the country's forest cover are also of great significance [Łonkiewicz 1994[Łonkiewicz , Fonder 2002.…”
