Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) have become of great importance to the Canadian fishery since the moratorium on northern cod (Gadus morhua), and an understanding of stock relationships among populations at the northern and southern extremes of their commercial range is crucial for proper management. We compared mitochondrial DNA sequence variation among fish taken from thoughout the Northwest Atlantic (Flemish Pass, the Grand Banks, Davis Strait, and Northwest Greenland) with samples from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Iceland, and Norway. Within a 401 base pair portion of the cytochrome b gene, 22 genotypes were identified. Three of these occur at frequencies >10% and in the same relative abundances in all samples (except the Gulf of St.Lawrence). Genotype proportions do not differ significantly among samples, and genetic subdivision among samples (measured by the coancestry coefficient theta ) is nil. Genetic distances among samples are not related to geographic distribution: pairwise differences between the Gulf sample and other western Atlantic samples exceed those for trans-Atlantic comparisons. These data suggest that there is sufficient mixing of Greenland halibut, not only within the NAFO regulatory area, but among sites in the North Atlantic generally, to prevent the development or maintenance of genetically independent stocks.

“…The 4TVn cod population also initiated its autumn migration progressively earlier at this time and extended its winter distribution to the south, large concentrations occurring in 4Vs particularly from 1990 (Hanson, 1995). With regard to other species, Bowering et al (1997) described the concentration of American plaice in deep water in SA2 + 3K in the late 1980s and noted reports of similar changes in distributions of witch flounder in 2J3KL, and of American plaice and witch flounder, as well as for cod, in 3Ps. Brodie et al (1998) recorded a sharp reduction between 1991 and 1993 in the proportion of the American plaice in 3LNO occurring north of 45 • N, and Iglesias et al (1996) found that the population was over-wintering in unusually deep water in 3LN in the early 1990s.…”

Comparative analysis of the diet, growth and reproduction of the soles, Solea solea and Solea senegalensis, occurring in sympatry along the Portuguese coast ce ' lia m. teixeira and henrique n. cabral from commercial fishing vessels operating with gill-nets and bottom trawls along the Portuguese coast, to examine diet, age and growth and reproduction. Soles fed mainly on crustaceans, polychaetes and bivalves. Feeding activity was highest in summer, for males and for the largest individuals. Significant differences were found between the proportion of prey items according to season, sex and size-class. Common sole presented a wider dietary breadth compared to Senegalese sole. Dietary overlap between the two species was higher for the winter period and for females. Age of soles was determined from sagittae otoliths readings. The length of fish analysed varied between 187 mm and 462 mm (oldest fish 9 years), for S. solea, and between 199 mm and 472 mm (oldest fish 8 years), for S. senegalensis. The von Bertalanffy growth equation coefficients differed between sexes. For both species, the asymptotic length L 1 and growth coefficient k obtained for females were higher compared to those estimated for males. The highest values of the gonadosomatic index were obtained for the winter period, when the highest proportion of individuals at spawning stage was recorded.
