“…It is not clear whether this is a change in behaviour or a typical behaviour that has not been previously observed, although major shifts in Greenland halibut distribution have been recorded in recent years (Anonymous 1995). Apparent changes in behaviour have been reported also for other flatfish species in this area such as witch flounder (Bowering 1995) and American plaice (Hippoglossoides platessoides) (Bowering et al 1995a(Bowering et al , 1996(Bowering et al , 1997Brodie et al 1995). The extent of Greenland halibut spawning in the area of the continental slope off eastern Canada has been discussed in Morgan and Bowering (1997).…”

“…The 4TVn cod population also initiated its autumn migration progressively earlier at this time and extended its winter distribution to the south, large concentrations occurring in 4Vs particularly from 1990 (Hanson, 1995). With regard to other species, Bowering et al (1997) described the concentration of American plaice in deep water in SA2 + 3K in the late 1980s and noted reports of similar changes in distributions of witch flounder in 2J3KL, and of American plaice and witch flounder, as well as for cod, in 3Ps. Brodie et al (1998) recorded a sharp reduction between 1991 and 1993 in the proportion of the American plaice in 3LNO occurring north of 45 • N, and Iglesias et al (1996) found that the population was over-wintering in unusually deep water in 3LN in the early 1990s.…”

“…There is evidence that increases in M began sometime prior to 1990 in Gulf of St. Lawrence cod (Sinclair, 2001;DFO, 2007), and this is accepted also in population status assessments of 4Vn resident and 4VsW (Mohn et al, 1998) cod. The increases in M documented for haddock in 4VW (Frank et al, 2001), and the collapse of the American plaice population in SA2 + 3K from non-fishing causes (Bowering et al, 1997), i.e. high M (Morgan et al, 2002a), also began prior to 1990.…”

“…Studies taking place on the Portuguese coast have shown that the reproduction period of Senegalese sole ranges from autumn to spring (Andrade, 1990), or for spring to summer (Dinis, 1986). Walsh, 1994;Bowering et al, 1997;Rijnsdorp & Vethaak, 1997) showed that a large variability in maturation could be related to the decline of populations. Length at first maturation obtained in the present study was similar to values obtained by Andrade (1990), for the south coast of Portugal.…”
