Changes in the Pancreas in Experimental Diabetes and the Effect of Lycopene on These Changes: Proliferating, Apoptotic, and Estrogen Receptor α Positive Cells

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the changes occurring in estrogen receptor (ER) α-positive cells, proliferating cells, apoptotic cells and malondialdehyde (MDA) expression in the pancreas of experimentally induced adult diabetic rats and to determine the effect of orally administered lycopene on these changes. Experimental diabetes was induced using a single dose of 50 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ). Following the administration of STZ, four groups of animals were established: Control + corn oil, control + lycopen… Show more

“…It should be noted that a study from Sandikci's group revealed that an increase in apoptotic cells was not observed in STZ-induced diabetic rats. 63 One potential explanation for the conflicting findings may be attributed to the different diabetes animal models between these two studies. While STZ was used to obtain hyperglycemia models in a previous investigation, HFD/STZ was used to establish diabetic animal models in our investigation.…”

“…Another important factor is the estradiol role in β cells protection against various insults, among which is STZ exposure [ 11 , 29 ]. Also, the α estradiol receptor expression increases in diabetogenic drugs presence, indicating the importance of this defence mechanism [ 46 ]. Therefore, it is likely that even with no observable changes in insulinemia, the classic protocols are able to disrupt, at least partially, insulin secretion in female Wistar rats, and outcome already observed in studies with female mice [ 47 ].…”
