Changes in the optical properties of benzo[a]pyrene-coated aerosols upon heterogeneous reactions with NO2 and NO3

Abstract: Chemical reactions can alter the chemical, physical, and optical properties of aerosols. It has been postulated that nitration of aerosols can account for atmospheric absorbance over urban areas. To study this potentially important process, the change in optical properties of laboratory-generated benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)-coated aerosols following exposure to NO(2) and NO(3) was investigated at 355 nm and 532 nm by three aerosol analysis techniques. The extinction coefficient was determined at 355 nm and 532 nm fro… Show more

“…Recently, several groups have used Aerosol CRDS (A-CRDS) to probe internal and external particle mixing Freedman et al 2009;Khalizov et al 2009;Lack et al 2009;Radney et al 2009;Attwood and Greenslade, 2012), effects of relative humidity (Beaver et al 2008;Attwood and Greenslade, 2012;Brem et al 2012;Trainic et al 2012) and particle reactivity (Lu et al 2011;Zarzana et al 2012). Agreement between extinction cross section measurements and those calculated with Mie theory is often promising, typically on the order of 2-12 % (Pettersson et al 2004;Baynard et al 2007;Riziq et al 2007;Freedman et al 2009;Lang-Yona et al 2009;Radney et al 2009;Miles et al 2010b;Li et al 2011;Mellon et al 2011).…”

“…In their measurements, k organic initially increased with OH-aging then reached a plateau, whereas the particle volatility continued to drop. Lu et al [251] quantified s ext , using cavity ring-down spectroscopy, and s a , using photoacoustic spectroscopy for benzo [a]pyrene-coated particles during their reaction with NO 2 and NO 3 . When some benzo[a]pyrene in particles was nitrated, evident by the parallel AMS measurements, both the scattering and absorption coefficients increased.…”
