A series of en echelon cracks run nearly parallel to the outer shelf edge of the mid-Norwegian margin. The features can be followed in a *60-km-long and *5-km-wide zone in which up to 10-m-deep cracks developed in the seabed at 400-550 m water depth. The time of the seabed cracking has been dated to 7350 14 C years BP (8180 cal years BP), which corresponds with the main Storegga Slide event (8100 ± 250 cal. years BP). Reflection seismic data suggest that the cracks do not appear to result from deep-seated faults, but it cannot be ruled out completely that tension crevices were created in relation to past movements on the headwall of the Storegga slide. The cracking zone corresponds well to the zone where the base of the hydrate stability zone (BHSZ) outcrops. Evidence of fluid release in the BHSZ outcrop zone comes from an extensive pockmark field. We suggest that post-glacial ocean warming triggered the dissociation of gas hydrates while the interplay between dissociation, overpressure, and sediment fracturing on the outer shelf remains to be understood.

ABSTRACT. Analysis of 2D multi-channel seismic data provided evidences that sediment slides are recurrent elements in the sedimentary succession of the Foz do Amazonas Basin. In the Amazon Fan, a linked extensional-contractional system glides along weak levels, forming gravitational fold-and-thrust belts of regional scale. Gravity-related fault scarps and sea-floor uplifts (up to 500 m high) induced surficial sediment slides along thrust-faults (average thickness between 200-300 m), resulting in structurally-driven mass movement deposits, as large as 10 4 km 2 . We document, as well, the occurrence of two thick large-scale megaslides along the steep margin to the NW and to the SE of the fan. Megaslides can remobilize siliciclastic series downslope as allochthonous masses over areas as large as thousands of km 2 :the Pará-Maranhão Megaslide (up to 1000 m thick) extends downslope to the Pará-Maranhão Basin over an area of about 90,000 km 2 . To the Northwest of the fan, the Amapá Megaslide Complex consists of a series of recurrent megaslides (each one as thick as 300-700 m), forming a thick stratigraphic succession related to mass transport processes, across an area of about 80,000 km 2 . The instability that triggers megaslides is most likely created by pore overpressure as indicated by the seismic attributes of their respective base of slides, characterized by seismic signals of negative polarity.

[1] Mass transport is an important process of sediment redistribution from shallow to deep sea basins. It is vital to understand this process for disaster prevention and protection of economic interests in coastal and offshore areas. We describe mass transport-dominated sedimentation in an active foreland basin, the Hidaka Trough, which developed from collision between the northeastern Japan arc and the Kuril arc. The basin is deformed by east-west compression associated with large, frequent earthquakes. The trough is filled with thick (>4.5 km) sediments, ranging from coal-bearing Cretaceous terrestrial strata to modern diatomaceous hemipelagic mud and volcanic ash. Bottomsimulating reflectors and the distribution of mud volcanoes, pockmarks, and acoustic wipe-out zones on the seismic records suggest the presence of subsurface gases in the sediments. The basin features stacked mass transport deposits (MTDs), but no channel-levee systems have developed. The MTDs are relatively thin (<30 m) and are derived from three sides of the basin margin. Initiation of submarine slope failure in this area may be controlled by multiple factors that increase driving forces and decrease resistance of the slopes. The driving forces include oversteepening of the margin slope as a result of thrusting and folding, and additional downslope gravitational acceleration caused by cyclic shaking during earthquakes. Decreased resistance in the slopes may be caused by the accumulation of excess pore-water pressure driven by a high-sedimentation rate, gas hydrate dissociation accompanying changes in sea level or seawater temperature, and liquefaction in coarsegrained beds during earthquakes.
