Religious affiliation in Czechia and Slovakia: Comparison and regional differentiationThe dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993 also led to a different development of religiosity 1 in Czechia and Slovakia in the last 30 years, which, however, continued to take into account the historical conditions of the last centuries. The current state of the religious structure of the population of Czechia and Slovakia is the result of the influence of several common (both states in the EU, open borders in the Schengen area, etc.), but also different factors (different role in the relationship between the church and the state, different number of migrants from abroad, migration from Slovakia to Czechia, etc.). The paper aims to analyse the development of religiosity of the population in both states over the last 30 years and to explain the causes of regional differentiation in Czechia and Slovakia. By comparing the results of the 1991 and 2021 censuses, we have identified not only spatial disparities at the national and regional level but also the driving forces that had the greatest impact on them. Secularization tendencies on the one hand and interest in new religiosity or alternative spirituality can be observed in both countries, but in the case of Czechia it is a more pronounced acceleration.

The covid-19 pandemic caused a significant change in how active members of Christian churches in the Czech Republic perceive and use technology to address their religious needs. Physical presence in worship, sacred spaces, and communities used to be almost the sole means of religious practice of Czech Christian believers before the pandemic. Technologically mediated services suddenly became the almost exclusive medium of content distribution (worships, readings, sermons, prayers), contact, and communication among believers. This study aims to understand the diversity of technology perception of Christian believers active in official Christian churches in the Czech Republic in their religious practice in respect of various technologically transmitted religious services before and during the covid-19 pandemic with potential impact on post-pandemic times. The qualitative research method of in-depth semi-structured interviews with 117 Czech Christian believers and 16 clergy representatives, all active in official Christian churches in the Czech Republic, and data gathering method (3 age cohorts in data collection team, 6 churches, and 8 regions) aim to map in complexity the evolution of their perceptions. The research took place from March–April 2021. Research outcomes show the breadth of the perception of the technologically mediated religious services during the pandemic. Unexpected exposure to technologies made many Christian believers re-evaluate how they perceive the role and contribution of new technologies to their spiritual lives. The findings help predict changes in the use of technology in Czech Christian faith communities. Understanding the diversity of perceptions may help churches establish communication strategies that reflect the current needs of their believers.

Children’s perceptions of local religious sites in rural central Europe: case studies in the Czech-Polish and Polish-Slovak borderland

This study focuses on the local identities of children living in rural towns of Czechia, Poland and Slovakia. Cognitive maps, drawn by elementary school students in geographically proximate municipalities near international borders, provide a means of investigating the significance of local religious sites in the minds of young people. This research successfully examines everyday interactions between the subjects and their local landscape. It seeks to highlight religious elements of local identities. The methods employed in this research present a more humanistic and qualitative approach, shedding light on the daily experiences of children in rural settings. Recognizing the inclusion and even the placement and artistic details of a religious site in a child-drawn map is a powerful way to move research “beyond the ‘officially sacred’”. The methods also allow for a blending of both passive – including a religious site in a cognitive map – and active – ranking a religious site among the top three important places – declarations of a religious element within local, territorial identity. This study demonstrates how children use elements of the local religious landscape in constructing and re-constructing their community identity. The two Slovak municipalities showed the greatest affinity for religious elements among the expressions of local identity (children’s cognitive maps). Poland’s municipalities ranked in the middle and the two Czech municipalities scored lowest in terms of religious sites being considered important to the research participants.
