Background Plants, though sessile, employ various strategies to defend themselves against herbivorous insects and convey signals of an impending herbivore attack to other plant(s). Strategies include the production of volatiles that include terpenoids and the formation of symbiotic associations with fungi, such as arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM). This constitutes a two-pronged above-ground/below-ground attack-defence strategy against insect herbivores.Scope Terpenoids represent an important constituent of herbivore-induced plant volatiles that deter herbivores and/or attract their predators. Terpenoids serve as airborne signals that can induce defence responses in systemic undamaged parts of the plant and also prime defence responses in neighbouring plants. Colonization of roots by AM fungi is known to influence secondary metabolism in plants; this includes alteration of the concentration and composition of terpenoids, which can boost both direct and indirect plant defence against herbivorous insects. Enhanced nutrient uptake facilitated by AM, changes in plant morphology and physiology and increased transcription levels of certain genes involved in the terpenoid biosynthesis pathway result in alterations in plant terpenoid profiles. The common mycorrhizal networks of external hyphae have added a dimension to the two-pronged plant defence strategy. These act as conduits to transfer defence signals and terpenoids.Conclusion Improved understanding of the roles of terpenoids in plant and AM defences against herbivory and of interplant signalling in natural communities has significant implications for sustainable management of pests in agricultural ecosystems.

Identifying and studying the environmental and agronomic factors are of major importance in increasing the quantity and quality of medicinal plants. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of mulch and biofertilizer application on yield and yield components, oil quantity and quality of purslane in different cropping systems. Two experiments were carried out with factorial arrangement based on randomized complete block design with three replications in 2015 and 2016. The first factor was cropping systems including Portulaca oleracea L. and Lallemantia iberica Fischer & C.A. Meyer sole cropping, the additive intercropping of purslane/dragon's head (P100/D20, D40 and D60 %); the second factor was mulch application including with (+M) or without (-M) wheat straw mulch; the third factor was two types of fertilization including application of 100% chemical fertilizer (F1) and 50% chemical + biological fertilizers (F2). The mulching significantly affected yield, yield components, oil content and omega-3 fatty acid of purslane. The highest value of omega-3 fatty acid was observed in mulched plants. Sole cropping of purslane increased number of capsule and seed yield. The highest land equivalent ratio (1.56) was observed in D40+P100 intercropped with mulch application and 50% chemical + biological fertilizers in 2016. Therefore, the organic intercropped system with mulching is applicable in the medicinal plant production such as purslane in order to reach sustainable agricultural goals.

Abstract. Utilization of graphite tail waste from the mineral beneficiation processing is very important since it contain significant amount of essential minerals which are necessary for plant growth. These mineral are required in biochemical processes and mainly play an important role as cofactor in enzymatic reaction. The objective of this research is to investigate the performance of graphite tail on supporting plant growth and yield of ground nut (Arachishypogeae L.). A field experiment has been performed to test the performance of mixed graphite tail and reduced organic matter dose. The graphite tail size were reduced to various sieved size, -80 mesh, -100 mesh and -200 mesh. The experiment was setup in randomized block design with 4 treatments and 6 replications for each treatment, while the control plot is received without graphite tail. The results demonstrated that reduced organic matter along with -200 mesh tail has potentially decreased plant height at the end of vegetative growth stage, in contrast for to -80 mesh tail amendment increased individual fresh plant biomass. Statistically, there was no change of plant nodule, individual shoot fresh and dry weight, root nodule, number of pod following any mesh of graphite tail amendment. Reducing organic matter while adding graphite tail of 5% did not change bean weight in all plot. In contrast, reduced organic matter along with 80-mesh graphite tail amendment improved the nut yield per plot. This experiment suggests that graphite tail, mainly -80 mesh graphite tail can be possibly used in legume production.
