Changes in the electrical resistivity of arid soils during oedometer testing

Abstract: International audienceElectrical methods used in geotechnical engineering are considered to be potentially useful for characterising soil settlement. In this study, a standard American Society for Testing and Materials oedometer was specifically designed for measuring the electrical resistivity of soils during oedometer testing. Relationships between the electrical resistivity and soil settlement were established for three remolded samples of saturated soils collected from the Yazd University (Iran) test site.… Show more

“…1). The two-electrode method (Ghorbani et al 2013;Zhang et al 2014) was adopted in this research. The electrical resistance was first achieved from the measured electrical current flowing through the specimen and corresponding voltage drop between the two electrodes.…”

“…This helped in defining the parameters of the field such as sampling and survey length and interpret the posterior data. (Seladji et al 2010) Along the positive relationship between electrical resistivity and geo-technical, parameters that are indirectly associated with the compressibility factors, which give an understanding of phenomenon relationship between soil settlement and electrical resistivity (Ghorbani et al 2012). Soil matrix and attribute governs the wide range of hydrological and ecological functions of soil, this need to be examining the geophysics in large-scale spatial and temporal domains, that can sight to have soil structure.…”

“…In the same way, to obtain a multi-functional device, a modified oedometer cell developed by [14] simultaneously measures the electrical resistivity and the settlement of the sample. The oedometer ring, which is composed of Teflon (an electrical insulating material) allows for the coupling of a classical oedometer procedure and an electrical resistivity measurement.…”
