Changes in the Content of Major Proteins and Selected Hormones in the Blood Serum of Piglets During the Early Postnatal Period

Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine the changes in the content of major proteins, glucose and selected hormones in the blood of piglets during the first 7 days of neonatal life. The study involved an entire litter of eight newborn piglets of F1 hybrids (Polish White Large x Polish Landrace) delivered from one sow in the second gestation. In blood samples collected directly after parturition (before colostrum intake), in the 12 JD , 24 JD and 48 JD hour and in 7 JD day of life, the content of total protein an… Show more

“…Leptin absorption from colostrum was less clear in previous studies, but an elevated plasma concentration of leptin was also associated with colostrum feeding (Blum et al, 2005;Schäff et al, 2014;Kesser et al, 2017). Absorption of colostral leptin occurs in rats and humans (Szymeczko et al, 2009;Woliński et al, 2014;Palou et al, 2018). Previous studies indicated lower leptin and adiponectin concentrations in milk or milk-based formulas than in colostrum (Kesser et al, 2015(Kesser et al, , 2017.…”

“…The glucose concentration was analyzed colorimetrically using a Synergy 2 Multi-Mode Reader (BioTek Instruments, Inc., Winooski, VT) with a kit reagent (Pointe Scientific, Warsaw, Poland). Total cholesterol and triglycerides were measured using commercial enzymatic kits (Pointe Scientific, Canton, MI), and TP and albumin were determined according to the methods described by Szymeczko et al ( 2008 ).…”
