“…The relative content of geoA ‐containing microorganisms was estimated to account for approximately 0.9% of the community in the water. This is similar to previously reported numbers (Azaria et al, 2020; Lukassen et al, 2017). As it is difficult to estimate the total amount of biofilm in fixed‐bed biofilters, and from other surfaces in the RAS, we have not attempted to estimate the major source of geosmin‐producing bacteria in RAS.…”

“…A numerical model was developed to describe the combined adsorption/biodegradation of MIB in the sludge [26]. In a later study, the enrichment of the sludge derived from the same RAS above with geosmin and MIB resulted in a significantly increased abundance of 12 distinct bacterial species [27].…”

“…The effect of low or high nitrate levels on off-flavor production has previously been studied (Schrader et al 2013), but in that study, no correlation was found. With only a few exceptions (Azaria et al 2020), the effect of denitrification on off-flavor accumulation has only rarely been a subject of research. According to our knowledge, this was the first experiment to study the concentrations of off-flavors in systems with woodchip bioreactor-based denitrification.…”

“…Only Schrader et al (2013) studied the effect of low and high nitrate content on off-flavors in the RAS, but observed no significant effect. Later, Azaria et al (2020) observed that among Betaproteobacteria genera, Thauera utilized terpenes to fuel denitrification as well as Comamonas and could utilize GSM and MIB as a carbon and energy source. As we were using a woodchip denitrification step, the formation of off-flavors was of interest in this study.…”
