Hanglaiwan subbituminous coal (HSBC) was subjected to solvent extraction (SE) with an isometric carbon disulfide/acetone mixed solvent (IMCDSAMS) to obtain a residue (RSE). Thermal dissolution (TD) of RSE was conducted in cyclohexane (CH) and ethanol (E), respectively, to afford residues R CH and R E . Both HSBC and the residues (Rs) were analyzed with multiple tools to understand their physicochemical properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis shows that >C–C<, >C–H, >C–OH, and >C–O– moieties are abundant in HSBC and Rs, while pyrrolic nitrogen (NP II) and sulfone are the main forms in which nitrogen- and sulfur-containing species exist, respectively, in the samples. According to the ultimate and Fourier transform infrared semiquantitative analyses, the aliphatic moiety-rich species obtained from the SE of HSBC with IMCDSAMS and contents of aliphatic moiety (AM)-rich species (AMRSs) obtained from the SE of HSBC with IMCDSAMS and AMRSs from the TD of RSE in CH are higher than those of aromatic ring (AR)-rich species (ARRSs). The ethylation of some ARs in RSE occurred during the TD of RSE in E. In addition, SE and TD increase the aromaticity of the resulting Rs. The mass loss (ML) decreases in the order of HSBC > RSE > R CH > R E in the temperature range of 30–400 °C, and the characteristic temperatures and maximum ML rates of the Rs are obviously higher than those of HSBC in the temperature range of 600–800 °C. These findings provide a scientific basis for the clean and efficient utilization of coals and their Rs.

In this study, the feasibility of catalyzing removel of thiophenic sulfur from coal with microwave irradiation was evaluated by dielectric properties test, and the chemical thermodynamics and kinetics of thiophenic sulfur in coal with microwave irradiation was obtained by density functional theory calculation. Results suggested that the imaginary parts of dielectric constants ε" of benzothiophene and dibenzothiophene are higher than those of coal samples, meaning that thiophenic sulfur compounds in the coal can be selectively heated by microwave. Linear Synchronous Transit/Quadratic Synchronous Transit method indicated that the microwave field catalyzed the removel of thiophenic sulfur mainly affected the breaking of C−H and C-C bonds, thus reducing the energy barrier (Eb) and activation energy (Ea) and increasing the logarithm of rate constants (lnk) in the desulfurization process. Moreover, the optimal removel path of thiophenic sulfur changed from β(a) to α(b), and sulfur-containing products changed from carbon monosulfide (CS) to thioketene(C2H2S) after applied microwave field. These findings reveal the catalytic mechanism of microwave on the removel of thiophenic sulfur in coal from hydrogen migration and reaction changes, which is conducive to the clean utilization of coal.

Depleted fossil fuel resources have led to an investigation of other promising alternatives such as renewable and unconventional energy sources. Shale formations have limited permeability. Therefore, several extraction techniques have been applied to improve residual oil recovery and production. In this work, the techniques applied above ground to extract the organic fractions from oil/gas shale are discussed. Studies related to compositional fractionation, ultrasonic-assisted, microwave-assisted, supercritical fluids, and surface retorting techniques have been conducted systematically in approximately 150 scholarly articles over the past 10 years. The impacts of each technique as well as the drawbacks and challenges are highlighted in this paper. The fractionation techniques are sufficient in general; however, they are time consuming as they include several stages and use a considerable amount of solvents. Ultrasonic and microwave techniques are highly reliant on formation transparency linked to the organic fraction heterogeneous distribution. The surface retorting method, which is highly efficient with up to 90% recovery, for example, the Galoter and Paraho methods, is still dependent on shale particulate size, generates a massive amount of spent shale as waste, and is prominently emissive. Therefore, assessments that can be used to overcome existing drawbacks are considered. This can provide practical insight about these techniques to overcome limitations and concerns in terms of efficiency, cost, environmental issues, and reliability features. The work highlights the dominant extraction techniques for further development.
