Changes in Student Motivation During Online Learning

Abstract: Self-directed e-learning (SDEL) refers to electronic learning environments where there are often no peer learners or instructors regularly available. Past studies suggest that lack of time and lack of motivation are primary causes of learner attrition in online settings. However, little is known about what influences motivational change during SDEL. We surveyed 368 adult learners from both higher education and corporate settings who had used commercial SDEL products. Results from stepwise regression analysis i… Show more

“…Alternatives to face-to-face training, particularly in rural and remote communities must be sought in order to train workforces constrained by financial burden as well as physical barriers. 9 With the pressure to reduce costs, increase access and improve the efficiency and technical content of training, technology is now being utilised to provide learning solutions. While the concept of online learning is not new, as technologies become more sophisticated, so do the modalities employed.…”

“…Blended learning retains some of the lower cost of computer-based training but circumvents some of the identified constraints; in particular it provides context for local problems in the face-to-face or more personalised component of a course. 9 As with students in higher education, health staff who participate in this type of learning for continued professional development are able to control their own learning outcomes whilst also engaging with mentors who can augment the learning process through direct support and supervision. 16 Instructors are also better able to exploit the relative advantages of both the e-learning and face-to-face components.…”

“…Previous research suggests that motivation plays an important role in learning (Keeley et al 2008;Song & Keller, 2001) and e-learning (e.g., Kim & Frick, 2011). The objective of our study was to find plausible strategies for the adaptation of task difficulty, given learners' current motivations.…”

“…The majority of the scale items were adopted from prior works of e-learning literature but modified slightly for our research context. Those items regarding e-learning self-efficacy were integrated and adapted from Garavan et al (2010), Kim and Frick (2011) Once the item list for the initial questionnaire was generated, an iterative personal interview process was conducted to refine the draft instrument. These interviews enabled the researcher to gauge the clarity of the tasks, assess whether the instrument captured the desired phenomena, and verify that important aspects have not been omitted.…”
